Collaboration

with external researchers

The Bolton Clarke Research Institute welcomes collaboration with external researchers to deliver high quality impactful research. We partner to ensure projects are ethical, feasible and aligned with organisational priorities, supporting improvements in care for older people, families and communities.

Explore our research principles and processes, and submit an expression of interest to collaborate with us.

Our research principles

All research undertaken at Bolton Clarke must:

  • Be relevant to our communities, staff, organisation and the broader aged care industry
  • Address a clear gap in existing evidence or practice, with potential to lead to positive change in care delivery
  • Receive approval from the relevant Bolton Clarke business leader and the Bolton Clarke Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC), if applicable.

How we prefer to work

We strongly encourage early involvement of Bolton Clarke Research Institute in project development, including:

  • Codesigning research questions and methods
  • Ensuring alignment with organisational priorities and operational realities
  • Supporting translation of findings into practice and policy

While we assess all proposals on a case-by-case basis, we do not typically engage in projects seeking recruitment support only, without broader collaboration or organisational benefit.

Application and review process

All research projects must undergo a 4-step review process, where appropriate, before any project can commence. You will be updated as your project progresses through each stage.

Please consider the timeframes indicated when planning your project.

step-0

Step 1 – Submit an Expression of Interest

To get started, please complete and submit the Research Expression of Interest (EOI) form below.

step-1

Step 2 – Initial review

Indicative timeframe: up to 2 weeks
The Research Review and Governance Committee (RRGC) Coordinator conducts an initial review to assess strategic relevance, risk profile and organisational capacity and feasibility.

If your project proceeds to Step 3, you may be asked to provide additional documentation where necessary.

step-2

Step 3 – Project assessment

Indicative timeframe: up to 2 weeks
Based on risk and complexity, your proposal will be reviewed by either the Senior Research Team (fast-tracked pathway for low-risk projects), or the RRGC Committee (standard pathway for projects with higher complexity or risk).
At the conclusion of this step:
* Low risk projects will be notified of the outcome.
* Standard/high risk projects will be notified of the outcome if unsuccessful or will proceed to HREC review (Step 4).

step-3

Step 4 – HREC assessment

Indicative timeframe: up to 4 weeks
The Bolton Clarke HREC assess whether the project meets ethical requirements for BCRI and Bolton Clarke involvement. The HREC committee may request:
1 - Amendments to the study design
2 - Additional documentation or clarification
A final determination is made once these requirements are addressed.
