Terrific trolley delivers Father’s Day fun for aged care residents

The residents at Bolton Clarke’s Fairview aged care community at Pinjarra Hills enjoyed a special cart on Father’s Day, designed to deliver a trolley full of memories for dads and their families spending the special occasion apart due to the coronavirus.

Bolton Clarke Diversional Therapist Mervat Awad donned her ‘Sunday best’ including trousers and a coordinating set of bright yellow tie, suspenders and top hat as she brought gifts, treats and engineered photographs in an Instagram-worthy photo frame for families.

“The families were delighted to receive the photos,” she said. “One family member told me it had made her heart sing.”

Residents David Price, Robert Boughen and Gordon James were among the gentlemen who took part in the festivities.

“I was thrilled to receive a treat and take a photo on Father’s Day,” said Gordon. “It made me smile. I was happy to receive a copy of the photo to keep in my room.”

David was likewise impressed.

“My family was happy to see the photo taken on Father’s Day. I enjoyed the little gift – I like reading, so the bookmark will be useful!”

Robert said that the team had done an excellent job in making the day special for all the fathers.

“Some have greatness thrust upon them,” he said. “What you have done for us is very nice.”

Robert also took part in entertaining his fellow residents, playing some piano for them following some encouragement from Mervat and the team.

“He did a fantastic job,” she said.

“Even though we were celebrating the fathers, everyone got involved. Over the last three weeks, the ladies who participate in our craft group made the decorative pom-poms that were in the gift bags.

“The treats on the trolley were drinks, chips and of course the gifts which included the pom-poms, a pen, bookmark, chocolates and a room diffuser to delight all the senses.”

Mervat crafted the special photo frame herself.

“I’ve made one before, for Mother’s Day and the feedback from families and residents was amazing – beyond what I could imagine!

“It worked very well, so it was an easy decision to do something similar for Father’s Day.

“We all had so much fun!”
