IDOP: Is positive ageing possible?

Is positive ageing possible?

That’s the question Bolton Clarke is asking as it kicks off a national conversation about positive ageing to mark International Day of Older Persons on 1 October.

The conversation is particularly important as international research shows attitudes towards ageing can shape the ageing experience.

Bolton Clarke Senior Research Fellow Dr Rajna Ogrin said the concept of positive ageing was introduced by the World Health Organisation in 1999.

“It means having a positive attitude towards ageing and making the most of opportunities for participation, health and security to enhance quality of life and holistic wellbeing. Ageing is a normal part of life and we’re all doing it.

“Importantly, because Australians are living longer we have a growing population of older people who can share what they’ve learned about living and ageing well.”

As a conversation starter, Bolton Clarke has created a series of six short (three minute) films featuring clients and residents sharing their ideas about what it means to age positively, what hasn’t changed as they’ve aged and what they wish people knew about growing older.

The organisation has also launched a short survey and is asking people to share their positive ageing priorities and role models.
