Aged care residents getting in touch with their spirituality

Thornlands aged care residents are getting to know different cultures and religions with activities including visiting a local Buddhist Temple.

Seaton Place residents made their recent bus trip more meaningful by taking off their shoes and wandering through the Fo Guang Shan Chung Tian Temple in Priestdale as part of their regular community-based activities.

Seaton Place Lifestyle Coordinator Lisa says the experience was invaluable for many residents to explore a different culture.

“I was looking for something both spiritual and cultural at the same time to give the residents a different perspective on cultures and religions,” Lisa said.

“The team and I really wanted to take the residents to experience something they hadn’t experienced before.

“The residents toured the beautifully landscaped gardens, visiting the main temple, tea house and conversing with the Master who discussed Buddhist philosophy,” she said.

Seaton Place resident Suzi has spent months at a time travelling to countries including Bali, Thailand and Hong Kong and says the visit brought back many fond memories.

“I always enjoyed the shopping, street food, visiting the temples and being around the local people,” Suzi said.

“It brought back a lot of memories especially from of my time in Bangkok and spending time with the monks there – they are kind, gentle and peaceful people.

“It’s really important to experience other’s culture or religion and be open to learning new things whether that’s here in Australia or when travelling overseas,” she said.
