Trip to art gallery inspires Beechwood aged care residents

Bolton Clarke Beechwood aged care residents have taken a unique tour through the Art Gallery of New South Wales as part of the gallery’s Art and Dementia Program.

The program provides the tailored experience for people who live with dementia and their carers encouraging self-expression, social connection and wellbeing.

Bolton Clarke Beechwood Lifestyle Coordinator Shruti says residents came away from the experience inspired to get more creative.

“We are always looking for meaningful experiences for residents and after visiting the gallery myself, I learnt about the range of programs they offer for older adults,” Shruti said.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for residents to explore different artworks and share their own interpretations of the abstract pieces.

“The visit also encouraged a lot of the residents to reflect on their own artistic interests and hobbies.

“It’s a fantastic way for residents to connect with our local community while also exploring their artistic flare.”

Residents explored a pottery installation inspired by an Indonesian artist’s life experience of war, a string puppet installation and a range of abstract paintings.

For resident Julie, the visit to the gallery was a refreshing way to learn more about different artists and a unique outing for residents.

“I enjoyed seeing the different artworks and listening to the meaning behind each of the pieces,” Julie said.

“There were some impressive pieces and it was great to get creative ourselves afterwards.”
