Parkinson aged care home trials full-time therapy dog

A Parkinson aged care home is paws-itively thrilled to continue its companionship with a first-of-its-kind pet therapy pup, after the trial was deemed a howling success.

Bolton Clarke Carrington residents have celebrated their furry, four-legged neighbour Romeo marking his first birthday and his first year working full-time in the home. 

Donated by a resident’s family member and local dog breeder, Romeo has now a permanent shadow for the home’s team, accompanying them daily to provide residents with regular visits, cuddles and endless entertainment.

Bolton Clarke Diversional Therapist Margaret says Romeo is an exciting new addition to the home.

“The family member came to us and let us know they had a few puppies from their dog’s latest litter and floated the idea of donating one to the home,” Margaret said.

“We loved the idea but had to take some time to figure out how it was going to work with the rest of the team because we hadn’t done anything like this before.

“It’s been wonderful having Romeo here - everyone loves him to bits and it’s brought so much happiness to the home just having him around.

“Team members take turns looking after him. He will come home with us overnight and then heads back in with us the next day!” she said.

After celebrating his birthday with the Carrington community, the team are hoping he becomes a shining example, with plans to expand the program with some of Romeo’s relatives to other local Bolton Clarke homes.
