Monash men first to try new diabetes education session

Bolton Clarke has expanded its free Be Healthy and Active wellbeing series with a new session on Diabetes, delivered in collaboration with Diabetes Australia.

More than 60 attended the first session at Monash Men’s Shed this month, led by Bolton Clarke Clinical Nurse Consultant Diabetes Allira Panebianco.

Topics covered included what is diabetes, risk factors and management, myths v truth and where to get information and support.

Bolton Clarke Community Programs Manager Kerry Rendell said after the session more than 60 per cent of participants said they felt very confident about recognising risk factors for Type 2 diabetes, with 50 per cent saying they would assess their risk using the AUSDRISK tool and more than 40 per cent saying they would share information with family and friends.

The Be Healthy and Active education program marked its 10th anniversary this year.

The program supports people to be proactive about their health through free, practical information sessions on a range of health and wellness topics and has delivered over 1,700 sessions to more than 43,000 participants nationally in retirement villages, community venues and online.
