Melbourne locals learning for National Nutrition Week

Melbourne residents have been brushing up on their nutritional knowledge learning more about maintaining good health through food for healthy ageing.
Bolton Clarke’s Be Healthy and Active Program offers free informational sessions for older residents to learn more about ageing positively.
Local Margaret says during the recent session at the Key Seniors Centre she learnt a few great tips she can integrate into her diet straight away.
“I came to the session because I was interested to see what I could learn about maintaining good health and I think it’s important to keep learning,” Margaret said.
“It’s important to put yourself in charge of your health and it was so lovely to be surrounded by people of a similar age in a safe and welcoming environment.”
National Nutrition Week (13-19 October) celebrates the many ways food connects and nourishes people while raising awareness of its importance for physical wellbeing.
The Bolton Clarke Research Institute conducted surveys with participants of the Be Healthy and Active sessions finding that 52% reported making changes to their diet habits after attending.
Community Programs Manager Kerry says the nutrition sessions are all about making healthy ageing doable.
“We give participants clear, evidence-based steps that they can apply at home immediately,” Kerry said.
“These nutrition sessions help people understand low-GI eating, fibre, healthy fats, and balanced meals so they can improve energy, manage blood glucose, support heart and brain health, and feel confident making better food choices.
“Beyond just learning about food, participants also build social connections and support around them with people in their community.”
The Be Healthy and Active program provide over 250 free sessions for residents around Melbourne covering a variety of topics about nutrition and other health topics for older people.
