Connected home care gives village residents VIP treatment

Bolton Clarke Fairways retirement village residents are getting the VIP treatment with a new home care booking service that’s helping them stay independent on their own terms.
The newly-introduced VIP program allows residents receiving government funded or fee-for-service home care to choose from a dedicated team of carers supporting the village and decide their own appointment times through an accessible online booking system.
Resident Gae has been receiving in-home care since moving to Fairways seven years ago and says the program has eased the pressure of booking.
“At this point I have an hour and a half of cleaning a week and that just helps with all the things I can’t do myself, like hanging up the washing and cleaning the bathrooms and floors,” Gae said.
“This is a great program for people like me because whether you prefer a certain carer or a certain day or time, you can book it in as you like.
“I don’t need to call the day before to check who’s coming or what time anymore – I have more control over the whole process.”
Gae said the VIP system meant she could fit her home care needs into her routine and work around social activities and appointments without having to cancel or postpone regular services.
It also meant carers were connected with the village community and able to take the time to get to know individual needs.
“One time I wasn’t feeling very well, and my Carer Megan could tell I was really distressed, so she sat with me for a bit before starting her work.
“After she left, she let her supervisor know and I got a follow up call the next day from the supervisor checking to see how I was and if I needed anything.
“I was just so overwhelmed to think that the office had been notified and someone was looking out for me - it’s really nice to know someone’s got your back all the time.
“I know that Megan might have time off and someone else might need to step in but for most of the time, it makes it so much easier having that one person looking after you.”
For Gae, her hour and a half of cleaning has become something she looks forward to each week.
“It’s lovely as well as she knows I like green tea so she will bring me a little bag each week with a teabag, 2 biscuits and a little note with sayings on it like ‘I’m courageous’ or ‘I’m kind’ and I read that and have it on my bench for the rest of the day.”
Bolton Clarke Operations Manager Home and Community Support Anja said the program was a great example of the benefits of connected care services.
“Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from residents and team members,” she said.
“Residents are particularly enjoying the flexibility of being able to schedule services around their other commitments, which is important for staying connected with their community and interests.
“This year marks our 140th anniversary providing in-home care including nursing, home care, specialised care such as dementia support and allied health services. We’re delighted to still be finding new ways to meet people’s needs and support positive ageing.”
