Aged care café brewing strong connections on Bribie Island

There’s always a spot reserved for Roma at her Bribie Island aged care home’s café in what she says is the best seat in the house.

Offering a barista-made coffee and a delightful breakfast menu, the Kookaburra Café at Bribie Cove has become a busy destination for residents and their family and friends.

“I’m here just about every day to order my half strength latte,” Roma said.

“Sam and the team look after me here and if I feel like a specific meal, they’ll whip something up for me.

“It’s a nice little addition to the home and it makes a difference to have a proper coffee.

“A lot of residents will come in with their relatives and the team here are just lovely.”

The trip down to the café has been an addition to Roma’s daily routine that she now says she can’t live without.

“I used to live in the village here and made the move into the home about two years ago after being in the hospital for a few weeks and needing more support.

“So it’s nice now to have this café to just come sit down, relax and you make friends as well - I get to chat to everyone that comes in.”

Café Manager Sam says The Kookaburra Café is equally popular for the wider local community, with everyone welcome.

“It’s all about the socialisation and meeting other people from around the home and the area,” Sam said.

“It has been a great addition to the home as it’s so much easier for a lot of the residents and their families to stay connected.

“We are getting residents from the retirement village and a lot of workers from the area as well which is great.”
