Village connection promotes wellbeing at Menora Gardens

Menora Gardens

Menora Gardens Retirement Village resident Helen Brennan says since making the move into the village nine months ago her days look very different – and it’s all about community.

To celebrate WA Seniors Week, she reflected on all the ways her new home allows her to maintain an active social calendar.

“I certainly get up a bit later, and the housework is a lot less. It feels like I'm at a resort all the time, or that I'm on a holiday - my day goes very quickly. I wonder how I had time for work or anything else,” she said.

“There's always people around - we either meet them at the pool, or we meet them in the dining room, or wherever we're out and about.”

“From happy hour to morning tea, afternoon tea, activities – whatever it is – I’ve never felt lonely here. I’m always supported by people around me. And there’s the beautiful surrounds too, gardens, parks, outdoor spaces.”

It wasn’t just simplified living that enticed Helen and her husband Alan to make the move. They said the aged care home co-located next door gave them reassurance they could stay in the community they’ve chosen if their needs change.

“The aging experience is something that comes to us whether we like it or not. But I must say, since I've moved here, I have felt much younger,” she said.

“I think the most important thing as one ages is the support that you receive. Living here, you are empowered because you're in your own home, you're in your own apartment, but you're still surrounded by others – there is always connection and there is extra support if you need it.”

WA Seniors Week (12 to 19 November 2023) is an annual event that encourages people of all ages to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of older people to the Western Australian community. WA Seniors Week is also a celebration of seniors’ active participation in community life.
