What’s in a name? Bolton Clarke explained…

Bolton Clarke may be a new name, but it has a rich history of helping the most vulnerable in our community. From humble beginnings, Bolton Clarke now draws on more than 200 years
of combined experience to deliver practical aged care support in Australia.

Who is Bolton Clarke?

Bolton Clarke honours two key community leaders who were there at our very beginning, and whose values have shaped our organisation and still drive our purpose today.

William Bolton aged care Lieutenant Colonel William Bolton
After serving at Gallipoli, Lieutenant Colonel William Bolton founded the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League (later to become RSL) in 1916, caring for ex-servicemen and women and their families. His vision led to a long history of practical support – from the establishment of Veteran’s housing in 1938 through to the first residential communities in 1980. From humble beginnings RSL Care has provided stability, security and a sense of community for all older Australians.
Lady Janet Clarke
Much loved philanthropist Lady Janet Clarke was a driving force behind the creation of the Melbourne District Nursing Society in 1885, later to become RDNS (Royal District Nursing Service). From its earliest days, when a single dedicated nurse took to the streets of Melbourne to tend to the sick and poor in their own homes, through to the bike brigades of the early 1900’s and today’s fully mobile nurses, RDNS has a proud history of quality clinical nursing and home assistance.

Over 130 years ago, the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) started in Victoria with just one dedicated nurse taking to the streets of Melbourne tending to the sick in their own homes.

RSL Care‘s history spanned over 75 years, driven by a purpose to actively promote the wellbeing and independence of all older Australians.

By coming together, RSL Care and RDNS are now able to provide more services and support, enabling more people to enjoy best possible quality of life and independence right across the country.
