Galleon Gardens expands Memory Supported Units

The future of residential aged care on the Gold Coast has been announced with the turning of the sod to celebrate Bolton Clarke’s new Memory Support Unit.

This expansion is part of a $10 million refurbishment to the Galleon Gardens residential aged care community at Currumbin Waters on the Gold Coast.

Property and Development Manager James Mantis said Bolton Clarke was proud to be incorporating the latest international dementia design principles including wayfinding support and outdoor living spaces

“The expansion of the Memory Support Unit is the next stage of our developments; we are excited to be able to offer flexible living options to support residential aged care with the comforts of private living space.

“The new work follows completion of our $3.3 million stage one refurbishment including the creation of modern, flexible configuration ensuite rooms and upgrades to community areas incorporating a new hair salon.

“There will be an outdoor area with green open spaces and an old caravan with an awning where residents will be able to come and sit and reminisce.

“The project also incorporates new residential aged care room configurations that allow couples to stay together in apartment-style accommodation.”

Resident couple June and Roy MacArthur officially held the shovel for the event, the pair have been married 65 years and recently moved into the care facility.

June and Roy are an excellent example of the changing care needs of older Australians and the potential offerings available to them, when the couple moved in they were determined to stay together and not be separated.

“Here at Galleon Gardens we have been able stay together in their own room with two beds side by side while we have been able to keep our second room as a lounge area,” Roy said.

“We have two chairs, two beds and even two televisions so there is no need to squabble about what to watch, and we’re always close enough to hold hands.”
